Since September is Alopecia Areata Awareness Month, I thought I would share how eyebrow microblading is changing the lives of women who suffer from this hair loss-causing affliction. Women no longer have to withdraw themselves from social settings because they feel self-conscious about the way they look due to missing eyebrows as a result of alopecia or even cancer treatment.

Alopecia Areata is an autoimmune condition in which the body’s immune system attacks healthy hair follicles resulting in hair loss. In many cases, this hair loss includes the eyebrows. Up until just recently, the only solution for women suffering from alopecia was to pencil in their brows, which isn’t always an easy task due to there being no hair present to act as a guide. Microblading has proven to be an innovative and effective procedure to remedy this situation.

What Is Microblading and How Can Someone with Hair Loss Benefit from It?

Microblading is a semi-permanent tattoo that is performed manually with a sterile blade that mimics natural hair strokes. It is performed by a certified technician usually at a salon, medi-spa, or a dermatology/plastic surgeon office. No matter how little or non-existent your eyebrows are, once the microblading procedure is complete you will have perfectly styled brows that look like your own natural hair!

Eyebrow microblading (also known as micropigmentation or 3D brows) takes anywhere from 1 1/2 to 3 hours to perform and often requires at least one follow-up session to complete the look. During the 2nd appointment, color and shape are tweaked and hair strokes are reinforced to ensure pigment retention for approximately a year to a year-and-a-half. In some cases, a second “touch up” appointment is needed, but is not typical.

Dealing with missing eyebrows due to alopecia or chemotherapy can be difficult and stressful for some women. Although they may only be physically losing their eyebrow hair, they are often also losing their self-esteem and self-confidence. They may also feel embarrassed, and retract from social situations for fear that people will stare at them or cast judgment. Eyebrow microblading not only restores the appearance of eyebrow hair, it restores a sense of self-assurance that was lost due to a condition or disease that is already very difficult to deal with.

Most clients say that they have better brows after microblading than they did before they ever lost their brows. Hearing this from women dealing with hair loss is probably the most rewarding feedback I could receive from my clients as their technician!
